What Best Free Prompter is
Best Free Prompter is a teleprompter that runs in your web browser. You paste or type a script, press play, and the text scrolls so you can read it while you look at the camera. It is free, it needs no account or download, and it works on computers, tablets and phones.
It has two ways to scroll. Fixed speed scrolls at a pace you set. Follow my voice listens while you read and keeps the line you are on at the reading line, so it slows down when you pause and catches up when you speed up.
How to use the teleprompter
- Add your script. Double-click the text (double-tap on a phone) and paste or type. Bold, italics, underline, colours, lists and paragraphs from Word, Google Docs and Pages are kept. Press Esc or Done when you are finished.
- Pick how it scrolls. Open Settings from the tab on the right edge (or move the mouse to the right edge). Choose Fixed speed or Follow my voice.
- Set it up for your shot. Adjust text size, side margins, alignment, text and background colour. Turn on Mirror text if you use beam-splitter glass.
- Press Space and read. Press Esc to jump back to the start for the next take.
Features
- Voice-activated scrolling in English, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch, with the language detected from your script.
- On-device speech recognition in recent versions of Chrome, so your voice is processed on your own computer.
- Choose the microphone in Chrome and Edge, with a live level meter.
- Two looks while following: Mark words highlights the word you are on; Soft gently fades lines you have read and glides more smoothly.
- Fixed-speed scrolling controlled with a slider, the arrow keys or the mouse wheel.
- Phone remote: scan a QR code to play, pause, rewind and change speed from your phone.
- Mirror mode for teleprompter glass.
- Formatting kept when you paste from Word or Google Docs, without the hidden Office clutter.
- Script history: every script you write or paste is kept in a list on the left edge, so you can switch between them, rename them, download them as .txt or import a .txt file. Stored only in your browser.
- Pinch to resize the text on phones and tablets.
- Saved automatically in your browser, so your script and settings are there next time.
- Fullscreen and a playback bar at the top of the screen.

Frequently asked questions
Is Best Free Prompter really free?
Yes. Every feature is free, there is no account, no watermark and no time limit.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in your web browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, iPad and Android. You can add it to your home screen if you like.
Can the teleprompter follow my voice?
Yes. Choose Follow my voice in Settings and press play. It listens while you read and scrolls to keep your current line at the reading line. It works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Read how voice follow works.
Is my script private?
Yes. Your script and settings are stored only in your own browser. They are never uploaded to a server, and there is no account. See exactly what happens to your data.
Which languages does voice follow support?
English (US and UK), Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch. By default the language is detected from your script, and you can pick it yourself in Settings.
Can I paste my script from Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Bold, italics, underline, colours, lists and paragraphs are kept, while hidden Office formatting and stray line breaks are removed.
Can I control the teleprompter from my phone?
Yes. Open Settings and choose Use your phone as a remote, then scan the QR code. Your phone can play, pause, rewind, scroll and change the speed. Only these commands pass between the devices; the script stays on your computer.
Does it work with teleprompter glass?
Yes. Turn on Mirror text in Settings to flip the text horizontally for a beam-splitter teleprompter.
Can I use it for Zoom, Teams or YouTube videos?
Yes. Open the teleprompter in a browser window close to your camera, make the text a comfortable size, and read while you record or present.
Will my script still be there tomorrow?
Yes, on the same device and browser. It is saved automatically in your browser, and earlier scripts are kept under History on the left edge. Clearing your browser data removes them, so download a copy of important scripts.
Can I keep several scripts?
Yes. Every script you write or paste is saved in your history, on the left edge of the screen (or Your scripts in Settings on a phone). Click one to load it, rename it, download it as a .txt file, or import a .txt file. They are stored only in your browser.
